twenty-six degrees
greeted Zoe and I
on our early morning walk
thoughts ran with me
what if
as I walked the deserted sidewalks
something happened to me
stroke . . . heart attack
something
I would probably freeze to death
before I was found
what would happen to Zoe

Dear Zoe would rescue you, dear Jerry, by barking like crazy and attracting somebody's attention. And besides that, rest assured that there is always your Guardian Angel walking by your side and nothing will happen to you without a possibility to get help.

This is poignant, I understand that such sad thoughts every now and then can be the consequence of our worries.

Warm hugs.

Yes, you are right, Margherita, Zoe would definitely do that. She's a little gem.

I understand exactly where you are coming from, Jerry.  I often worry about what would happen to my Benji-dog and my Cleo-cat if I were to die inside my house and nobody would know for days and my babies wouldn't get fed.  And what would happen to that even after I am found?

Hugs and cuddles and kisses to beautiful, cute, cuddly, clever, lovable, loving, adorable Zoe

Thank you Owl. I have someone who said they would take care of Zoe if anything happened to me. And I feel confident they would take her. I am just not sure they would keep her. I have a feeling they would give her to someone. That could be good, but of course you never know. Anyway, I think about it every so often. Give Benji-dog and Cleo-ca a pat on the head and a scratch behind the ear from the guy from the swamp.

Oh, Jerry, I am so glad to hear that about Zoe!  However, I know what you mean and even if they did keep her and no matter how much they love her and are wonderful to her, they won't be you and she will miss you.

Thank you, I will give Benji a pat on the head and Cleo a scratch behind the ear from the guy from the swamp WHO HAS ZOE!

Whilst it tore me into shreds to lose Flicka, my horse (when he was 37½ human years), and Daisy, my dog (when she was 14½ human years), and Tigger, my cat (when he was 15½), I am glad they didn't suffer the separation anxiety that I did.

It is my wish that Benji and Cleo - many, many, many, MANY years from now - go before me, for the same reason.

However, Rexli, a dog I had (a spaniel) previously belonged to the husband of a friend of mine.  My friend wasn't into dogs and her husband's dog was a one-man dog and Rexli didn't have much to do with anyone else.  They were leaving South Africa and going to Switzerland and were going to put Rexli down to save him separation anxiety.  I freaked and begged them to give him to me.  We used dog psychology and in practice, they brought him to me for one night first.  Rexli sat at the front door from the time they left and about every 10 minutes he would give one quiet little yelp.  My children (very young then) and I sat on the floor with him until it was their bedtime and then I sat on the floor with him the rest of the night.  The next time we made it a weekend, then a week and so on, until Rexli was so excited about seeing the family he was left with or collected by that his daddy felt it was fine to give him to us.  I made one stipulation though, which his daddy accepted.  That was that if they returned, Rexli was OURS and would NOT be going back to him.  They did return and I invited his daddy to visit him - but he didn't - couldn't handle it and I can understand.  They subsequently left for Switzerland again and this time, they didn't return and Rexli was happy with us for the rest of his life.  Perhaps that will raise your spirits a bit (and mine) in our fears for what will become of our babies if we die before them.

Enjoyed this Jerry and the sentiment.  Me, I spend little if any time thinking about "what-ifs" - I have faith that things will work out, but for this piece...what ifs worked perfectly.

Spoken like a beloved. The road goes both ways for the two of you. I'm sure she worries what you'd do without her as well.
Acknowleging the love and need others have for you....priceless.
