exhale . . .
cigarette smoke
seen through a neon blitz
from across the street
in the dark hours of morning
remember the fun times
shadows evaporate the smoke
I sit up
on the edge of the bed
looking back at the window
its the flashing neon
it’s a cigarette smoke gray winter
New York City
Manhattan never sleeps
if these walls could only talk
who has been where I sit in this skuzzy old hotel
the anti-heroes
of the Beatnik generation
Ginsberg . . . Kerouac
Burroughs, ah . . . Naked Lunch
oh, back to reality
if what this cheap hotel room
was, in fact, real
I don’t sleep well, if at all
dreams in the form of nightmares
repeat night after night
severed from that reality I spoke of

inhale . . .
into the infinite velvety downy
and never-ending déjà vu,
notes of a blues saxophone
drifting muted through the window
sounding forlorn
even spiteful, crafty even
and that makes me think of
her . . .
and the many miles I have traveled
o’er lonesome highways and boxcars
full of danger
to get to her
New York City
with its subways
dangerous too
to forget the torment of a dangerous romance

who am I kidding

You have created a very tangible melancholic  atmosphere of this kind of hotel. Oh yes if those walls could speak there would be material for many interesting eye-opening books no doubt. You know how to listen to those wall whispers, dear Jerry.

Excellent.

My thoughts come out as dismal and unsure at time as I think back on certain parts of my life. Thank you Richy, for being here with me.
