we are born
innocence personified
held in hand from our mother’s body
spanked (do they still do that?)
and laid down
first order of business
learn gravity
we develop emotions
mental power
stunning our kindergarten teacher
first one to raise their hand
our unsullied faces
innocent eyes
look around at the unknown
taking everything in
as the grown-ups
the mother and fathers
everybody within our sphere
clap their hands
at the amazing child in their midst

ahhh . . .
that’s how it goes
the almost supernatural attachment
brought on by
their own inspiration
so we collide with life
pulling and shoving
on a course for our bearing
to be whatever
is our destiny to be

eh, we journey on
dogging the boulders and caverns
of life
assuming (never assume)
we have life’s answers
but when we come right down to it
we haven’t even a hint
for nature does not play
the same game
as we do
our so-called answers
deceives us
that we actually have the answers
but no
we find out our answers
are delusional
now what are we to do

we’ve no choice
we must carry on
convincing ourselves
we can overcome
the wreckage of our life
but this time
our thoughts look back
at all our mistakes
we look back far too often
that then
is the crux of the problem
we have come very a long way
from than innocence
of birth
to . . .

O to live again, an innocent, guileless child.
But we'd miss a lot of fun along the way.
Taking the good and the bad , may your happy days  always outweigh the sorrowful

And I thank you for your very nice comment, Emma. It's difficult for me to even think back to those days of innocence, but I know they were there for me.

of course they were there and still are in ways you may not be aware of
your deep sensitivity in your poetry displaying an open heart is indicative of some innocence that lingers inside you

"We collide with life"
"Nature does not play the same game"
Simple yet profound observations give depth to this piece. I really enjoyed reading it

Your much appreciated comments on my poem this morning means much to me, Liz. When I wrote those words, nature does not play the same game something within me felt good. Now I see why.

Hello Jerry, this is a very perspective on life, so true that we are born innocent, and that we only experience life, i like the poem and the rich analysis, however so poetical,

have a nice daay

Yep, I think you pretty well nailed it with this one.   Your progression of innocence is dead on.

Thank you a lot, Lori. From innocence to sometimes innocence near the end. I guess that is a blessing. Maybe.

A repost
The Journey
            From There to Here

      Thinking back to graham crackers,
and taking naps upon the mat.

            To fast food servers,
     filling endless cups of coffee,
While old men sit and chat.

Ahhh . . . Graham crackers for sure, Jo. Your words sent me back in time and put a smile on my mug. Thank you for that.

I think innocence is a walk in the woods or a day spent at the beach...come to think of it thats what I did and enjoyed when I was young and innocent...James

Thank you James. Innocence is a much maligned situation.

In the beginning we did not know we were experiencing life.We just lived it as it was presented to us.I remember kindergarten with love because of Miss Finnigan. She had yes, those naps upon the mat I mentioned and we passed out milk in small glass bottles and ate graham crackers with it. But even more, in the closet she had a llttle treasure that amazed and amused us whenever she took it out.A Little monkey puppet that I know we all thought was real, lived in that closet.Kindergarten is the most important class. We start out in school and if that experience is good we go forth with great expectations.  MY  daughter started out in a horrible kindergarten class. The teacher was a screamer.I was so happy to learn that class was too large and my daughter along with a few others were put into another  kindergarten class and that teacher was wonderful. A whole year could have been wasted in a bad first class  could be the ruin of many kids.

Jerry Pat, I read all of your interesting thoughtful post but only remarked on the first stop we all had to take. Maybe later I can do more to show my appreciation of  your story of life as it is lived. jo

I recall my kindergarten class as well, along with the naps. Miss Reinhart didn't have a monkey in the closet, but I had something just as good. I had Marilyn, Martha and Mitzi. My "Three M's" is how I refereed to them when I wrote about them by the time I hit the first grade. I was in love with them, or as in love as it was possible for a five-year-old child could be. Wonderful memories, Jo.

Jo, you are a jewel in that you set the standard high for commenting, and don't think I am not aware of that.
