Barely a week in
Winter neuters the landscape
save for the shrill sound
breaking my sleep

are you the one that stays
the course, through the worst
of the wretched days

or the one I once craved for
that haunts unexpectedly,
a desire destined
to remain in utero.

As old man winter "neuters" everything to its barest form, so do the memories shatter the soul.

Very intense, captivating poem, dear EmmaRose. I love Jerry's comment and agree.

Wonderful, my friend! So much longing in the last stanza that it almost screams out.

Well done!
