     New Love and Spring

We are the fragile flakes
of snow that dance the
bitter  twilight wind,
never lingering long,
but for a sweet-delicious
moment, like an unexpected,
gentle kiss on the cheek,
while our finest dreams
   of youth
and ‘best intentions’ lie
still and broken now with
the dead leaves gathered
round the frozen feet of
   Winter trees.
It is perhaps most fitting
that only they remain
the oldest living things,
yet we cling on in eternal
hope  and wonder
to the gossamer promises
of new love and Spring.
