the bayou makes music tonight
such an undisturbed
serene sound
it seems to eradicate
the immeasurable side of me
and reaches
for the goodness hidden for so long
giving me courage
to take that last step within myself
beneath this membrane of night
swathed in the hushness of the moment
is a tenderness
which has escaped me
until now
opening that door
the one which has been closed for so long
my mother is behind that door
and . . . as I open it
I say . . .
I forgive you
and close the door
but not before
I see tears swelling in her eyes

if only in poetry and imagination, making peace with a childhood of hurt, will bring you into a serene place.

This is so deeply captivating, dear Jerry, you experienced a very precious moment of inspiration. To forgive is the ultimate act of an awakened heart.

I think your poem reached its destination and intent, across time and space.

Yes, I understand, Margherita, and I am happy I found a way to forgive her. I still don't like her or what she did, but I've dealt with it.

How beautiful this is.I know how hard you have been hurt over your young years. So I understand this was very hard. But honestly I feel you had to do it and I am proud to know you have finally found the way.Peace to you.

An interesting write of a healing event.  I hope this has brought you some peace.
I like the way you have presented this but I suspect that you now have a longer version waiting to be written.  Maybe that is the next step?

I can't imagine such a door, much less opening it - and there would be no tears.
Some curses won't be broken.

Thanks latearrival, I never thought it was possible to forgive, but I realized, finally, I was only hurting myself. I appreciate your kind thoughts.

Krawdad, I went into this act of forgiving backward I guess, but the longer version was written and published before I was able to, in my heart, forgive her when I wrote my memoir. Thanks for being here . . .

It's very touching, Jerry!
Forgiveness is the greatest thing for it can release.
And whatever our mothers have done, at first they gave us life.

The mother I forgave didn't give me life, Gale, I was adopted.

sigh, I called mine yesterday, in need of 'her' and she wasn't there, she was so focused on not knowing what time it was, that I might as well have not called...oh, now back to the poem, forgiveness...sigh, it is pivotal...great write
