Fall Blown Leaves

We threw many things to the wind
watching as it swiftly blew by
We tossed away so much
that never should have been thrown away
unaware we’d want it back again.

Childhood
the newness
the wonder of every day and thing
of never wanting to close your eyes
in fear of missing what’s coming next
when naps were sometimes welcome
but night time sleep never was
because too much could pass you by.

So much blown away
like beautiful Fall dropped leaves
never to be seen again
except perhaps
in dreams.

The youthful teenaged years
when the opposite sex
was no longer just a friend
but an enrichment to life,
love was no longer
just Mom and Dad
Gramps – Grandma - Brother – Sister
a word we were taught to use
but a full blown yearning
burning
feeling
desire to be whole
at last.

So many grains of sand swept by
only touched in their inception
never endeared
understood
needed
as now they are
when beyond the reach
of time-worn souls aching
to sense their essence
again.

The years between the youth and now
when we learned or knew it all
when everything was ours
couldn’t be
wanted too
or didn’t
when we melded souls
created kids
taught them an important word
they didn’t understand.
Love.

Or not.

The age of all those years blown by
the one’s we kept
that brought us here
wondering
wondering why . . .

We threw so many things to the wind
watching briefly as it swiftly blew by
We tossed away so much
that never should have been
unaware we’d want it back again.

Unaware
we’d desperately
want it back

again.

Okay. THIS is one of, if not, your very best, Jimmy. You spelled out my life mostly within the lines of this poem. Your expressions and thoughts about our phases of living are momentous and revealing, AND so very, very true. I'll be saving this.

This is such an intense write, dear Jimmy. You drenched your words in the colors of melancholy. It is touching and yes, I understand this.

makes me feel how precious life is as we  start to age more, and that pang in the heart feeling that there is nothing we can do to go back and do it again
but there is still life ahead I hope
