The Dark

I love the dark, in it I can't
See all the nothing I possess,
Where given light I just stare at
This empty house, building up stress.
And I sleep with my headphones on,
The music blaring at full blast...
So as to not find myself drawn
Down mind-raping dreams of the past.

And I stand on my own two feet
So no one sees the curled up ball,
(Fetal position, broke and beat),
That lies behind this smiling wall
That I present to all, full-fledged...
The perfect mask of dignity.
How else to face a world pledged
To but greet me with enmity?

...Or strip me somehow of my soul,
By failing light of tragedy.
When in darkness I am made whole,
For who could hate me more than me?
And so I rise when all is black,
When nothing's even vaguely clear,
To stretch myself out on a rack
That makes your torments disappear!

For I know nothing hurts so much
As even daring to believe,
When everything I ever touch
Is but given reason to grieve.
And so I ride each night this way,
Agony's very underling...
So numb, by the dawn of each day,
'Can't see or feel a blasted thing!

Sometimes wallowing in our own River Styx we are compelled to relive the troublesome past in all its horrific details. You do this reliving quite well, Michael.

No one does dark as well as you do, Michael.
It can be a bit hard to beat back the shadows sometimes.

Michael, I don't have an earth-shattering comment to share ~ just that I seek out your poetry, read it and often come back to read again.

That's what it's all about to me.  Your poetry always interests me and intrigues me.

even in the darkness there is strength just being able to endure pain encourages hope. brutally honest and open words which were soulfully written leaving the reader to ponder much and to realize that pain is not exclusive to one self

Nyctophilia...I love the dark too. Enjoyed.

I'll keep these dreams hidden
inside these eyes of mine
until my tears fall
unto my tainted hear
