Soda Cap Trap
(Then and Now)

I used to pop my bottle caps
to see what I might win.
It would either read “You won blah blah”
or a plain old “Try again.”
And it didn’t matter the poison
whether Pepsi, Coke, or Sprite,
the rule of thumb was easy as pie
and all in the world seemed right.
But not so much today, I’m afraid.
The Coke-cap games have changed
to something like Trigonometry
twisted and deranged.
But forgive my naive analogy.
Math is far too analog.
It’s more like Star-Trek meets Scantron.
or that the Borg has met the Blog.
Or maybe its the NSA
since, to get my free twelve pack
I am required my whole life history.
No need for them to hack.
But wait, maybe they’ll still need to
since the umpteen dozen fields
faulty scripts, browser-bugs,
and mysterious cyber-shields
will never let me make it through
this mine field at my fingertips,
as I strain to read the alien code
through plastic and Dr-Pepper-drips.
But even if I finally did it
I could never prevail with a single win.
I’d have to get the next winning cap
again and again and again,
garnering points like soda bubbles
swelling to the very top.
And just like my drink, my hopes must sink
into a flat and flavorless slop.
My point is not that the past was far better
either then or now, you always lose.
But today, before you know one defeat
you’ll buy twentyfold of their sugary ooze!

Aaaarggghhh...too many bottle caps.  I don't think I'll have what you're having...but it was a fun poem nevertheless.

Clever little ditty, Stephanos.  I don't think I could figure out those numbers even if I tried.

Good to read you
