Eyeless

I have been told good poetry
Need never once use the term: "I"
Negligent form, allegedly,
In spite of any reason why
Persons might choose to do just that...
Reflections, grief or vanity—
Inspiration drawn by looks at,
Or comparisons to humanity.

But think of what Joyce Kilmer saw,
Surely that garners exception?
Or does her great poem bear flaw,
Has half the world miss her deception?
And what about Byron's Chillon,
How could he have tarnished such work?
Could such a masterpiece be drawn
Where egotism didn't lurk?

Or even Edgar Alan Poe—
Picture him, "nearly napping," still.
Did this perfectionist not know
Such lines merit a poem nil?
I this, I that... I, I , I, I!
My friend, I do hear your complaint.
Still in my heart, I cannot lie,
To me those works are sacrosanct...

And to think of your "I less" world,
I but perceive the tragedy
Such selfish selfless views unfurl
Across the forehead, "Me, me, me!"
Though if only to please one's view,
My God, with no diversity;
I'd rather be eyeless it's true,
Than be the one who cannot see!

Hah! Such thoughts about not using the word "I" borders on idiocy. My poem for the day has a few "I's" in it. Heh.Heh
