Settlers

The cardinal rule of something vague:
Anonymity, like a plague,
Reaches us all, in fear— in doubt
Of what we cannot live without.
We look to others, hopes unshown
Tomorrow finds us not alone...
And yet alone, taking this stand,
Who's really there to hold your hand?

Aligning self through greed— through need,
It's but ideals we concede;
Yet open up our hearts to trust
With a self-abandoning lust!
And so together, still alone,
Sharing a name with one unknown;
We march toward tomorrow aggrieved
With our positions misbelieved.

Still when we look the other way—
Forsake the bonds of yesterday,
As the end crashes down on us;
We're caught up in the impetus.
We yearn madly for what we had,
As the emptiness drives us mad.
Until again, through fear and doubt,
Search for what we can't live without.

I loved them all...I heard one say
Of those once touched— all gone away.
But was it love or lust he quelled?
Was it his dreams, or hers he held?
Or might the dreams of two be shared,
Without lies to leave feelings spared?
Or do we accept "good enough,"
Rather than call on true love's bluff?

Yeah buddy, you have delved deep within the structure of . . . "love" . . . and ferreted out the truth of it all. We fall in lust and eventually we fall in love to complete the circle of romantic chase, to complete lust, to, at one point in time, living with a stranger. Ahhh . . .

Never really liked this one myself, that's why I didn't post it when I wrote it... but I figured it had to have some merit or I never would have written it to begin with.  I'm glad you all enjoyed it.
