Fair to middlin' of nowhere

0 posted 2013-08-07 12:12 PM

One of two
full blood red blossoms
was gone
upon my return
Given the choice
of giving my rose
with a smile
Or the feeling
that someone has
been inside the wire
too close
touching
the house perhaps
perhaps not
touching
a child taking
home to mother
innocence
But Roses
aren't just
Roses
to me
For example
my daughter's
middle name
is Rose
named after
his late wife
my best friend
and a
great grandma
on her daddy's side

Our first rose we planted
was when we got married
It was just thorny sticks
in a plastic bag of dirt
all I remember is
the word flame
in the name
The buds were yellow
at their bottoms
and innocent pink
along the petal edge
It was a climbing rose
long stems branched out
heavy laden with blooms
that as they opened
their colors changed
the petals deepening
into shades of orange
and crimson
when the wind bounced
the loose branches about
you understood how
the rose came by it's name
I believed it to be
the most beautiful rose
I had ever seen
something was mentioned
about a trellis
but nothing was done
in time
It split right down
the middle
and died
I took it as an omen
Today I have a trellis
and pink and pinker
blooming sweet
the blood reds came
to share the rose bed
from a corner of
neglected near to death
It now blooms so lovely
one comes up missing
once in a while

What a poem to wake up to, Lori. Telling the tale of the Rose as you skidded across time and troublesome delights, but always, always returning to the Rose. I would love to hear you read this. It is a poem which begs to be read.

Why thank you very much Jerry for your comment about reading this aloud. It just so happens I will be reading my poetry later today.  I was debating about adding this one. You helped me make up my mind.
Bless your heart.

Lori
I just hope this isn't another one of my poems only you like......

something about roses evokes these regal thoughts which you bring much life to in the joy of the blooms
