A bruise

that festered

through my skin

I held it in

my fingers splayed

to put my insides

in again

gut-shot

I shoulder

weight to blade

to bury what is left of me

condemned

to dig

my own damned grave -

without a word

to next of kin.

This word here . . .
quote:
gut-shot

explains the whole poem, because as I read your words I felt gut-shot it was so real.

I've never actually been gut-shot. (I've never actually been shot at despite my legendary proclivity for throwing myself in front of speeding bullets. <--Joke-->laugh? no?u

I've just heard that being gut shot hurts like hell.

So I used it metaphorically. *smile and shrug*

Thank you for being up to read me, and for your time, Jer. Yer a doll.

Actually...
My house and cars got in the way of a few bullets from neighborhood shootings but the fools only hit them because they can't move.
Gut-shot sounds like a direct hit and I understand what you mean.

... without a word to next of kin

Gosh, this really hurts and reaches deep.

Impressive rendering, dear Karen!

Hugs.

Digging your own grave sucks bad enough already (I should know, I've made a life out of digging mine)... so why would you want to involve kin?  The vultures will have their day... why wet their beaks for them?  ((Hugs)), K.  Now pass me back that shovel will ya?
