I wrote this poem the day before my wife died. She had been on life support for two weeks. We both had living wills. They took her off life support. She was gone in two hours.

Wife of mine I feel so helpless,
This time I'm in great distress.
In the past I've been able to
Fix our problems with magic glue.

Oh, we have had a few setbacks,
Some assailed us in two-prong attacks.
I held my own, did not give in,
Determined to beat it and win.

With you by my side I hung tough,
Until the problem I did cuff.
Nothing could penetrate and harm,
Side by side we fought arm and arm.

It is different this time old girl,
Life's hurricane has been unfurled.
Giving me pause, and time to think,
This time everything's out of sync.

The years have come to you at last,
Given you something I can't blast.
It has dug deep and found your core,
I hardly know you anymore.

I scream aloud and yes, I cry,
'Cause I can't fix this on the sly.
This is something new in our life,
It's struck down my beautiful wife.

I am here and will always be,
I'm weathered like an old oak tree.
Slightly bent and worse for the wear,
But I straighten myself and glare.

I can't fix it this time my sweet,
But if we can, death we will cheat.
My soul is gray and in anguish,
Bringing you home my only wish.

If I cannot fix it this time,
And all I can to do is rhyme,
I give thanks to the night we met,
And tell the world we aren't done yet.

These beautiful, intense, poignant words, Jerry, tug at my heartstrings. No, and even if she is gone, what has been between you, will always represent a wonderful gift and one day you might meet again in another dimension, where I believe love bonds continue to bless us, without interfering in any way with other love stories there might be.

I am sure your wife was very grateful for your love drenched poetic rendering of your sadness at the time.

I agree 110% with Margherita Jerry.  This was a heartbreaker and I had to break out the tissue.  I'm sure Dottie is very grateful you released her from her body. And because you have been loved by and loved
you will touch hearts again.
Thank you for sharing your hurting heart in this piece.

Appreciate your kind words, Lori. Don't know why I posted this today, it isn't the anniversary of her passing. I don't know why, but I am glad I did.

JerryP - It's been a long time since I read a piece that made strong emotions whelm up inside me but this one definitely did it. To lose someone so loved is crushing and it makes you want to hold your loved ones without ever letting go. Thanks for sharing this. It penetrated skin, nerves, blood vessels and tissue and crashed straight into my heart. Stay strong Jerry and don't stop writing. Namyh

Your words are a comfort even now, Namyh. Thank you for them and from the warm place within you that sent them.
