Fair to middlin' of nowhere

She peacocked the golden haired grain stalks
flaring from the heart of her stone white vase
She had been bedraggled from the storm
listing to the south with broken stalks
astray like stubborn strands of blond
She beckoned me to her
with those wild golden locks
My intent simply to straighten and adjust
I found myself deep into the particulars
of each and every stalk I touched
Height, color, shape of head and length of hair
all came under my scrutiny
as into what position they would be
Short heads to the outside line the rim
Tall perfect examples take the center's reign
In the middle fill in the other ordinaries
She took me back to long ago memories
a first job at a floral shop
art classes in Jr. High
to get her as she wished
Only my best would do
She blessed me
with pleasure in the doing
and an approving smile
when I was done

Ahhh . . . I liked this gem, Lori. You dug deep down and gave the Wheat Goddess the very best you have, and that is considerable. Lovely wordplay. Touching poetry.

Margherita, it was my mother's vase and it sat in the corner of their screened in porch for years. Mom has lost that to Alhzheimers but my Dad remembers it. I wrote this as a follow up to Empty Pot as a way for my Mother to be able to appreciate the vase now.

Your sensitivity and heartglow is deeply felt, your words touch me. So sad, when memory fails to accompany us till the end ...

Thsnk you Margherita.  The nice thing about the stage where my Mom is at now, is that she is happy and laughs and smiles a lot. I don't think we have ever gotten along better.  Never thought I'd live to see the day my Mom and I didn't argue.  God blesses us in all things-but you already knew that.
