Fair to middlin' of nowhere

I recall as a young child
no more than knee high
to his golf bag
On Saturday's my Dad
would putter about the house
until my Mother yelled
“Get that club out of
my living room!”
Before I knew it
they were both wearing those shoes
that sound like dog toenails on tile.
Not to be left out, curiosity asked
to caddy for my mother
one hot summer day by Hedville
No Cart, no wheels or handle to pull
Just me and the unrelentings of
scorching no hat overhead sun
lean in to dry hot wind
dead, dumb and deepening weight
of leather strap...leather strap...
Hedville had no shade
It had no trees bigger than me
Wide Open Wind Invitational
Panting upgrade into the sun
to the who knows now
which hole it was
Most likely the second
Developed a distinct distaste for golf
Found it to be
indistinguishable from hard labor
It was not fun
It was lunacy
I quit

My father, however, has hung tough
o're chips and slices caught in the rough
through sand traps, yap traps
and plain ole crappy Kansas weather
Still at it with his buddies
par for the course at 84
No, he didn't shoot that
I mean his age is 84
and he is handicapped
I think that means he scores
too much so he had to
join a Golfer's Set Aside program
He must enjoy golf a lot
or at least the company
and the coffee has been good
long as this Duffer's daughter can remember.

This is a golfers poem. I bet your parents will like it.

I didn't get it done in time for supper (4:45) to read it to them this Sunday. Next Sunday is their 57th wedding anniversary, the Sunday after that is my Dad's 84th birthday. He is still golfing.  I was asked to write a poem about Golf to read along with some of my other poetry at their assisted living center in August.

Wished you could have got it to them today. But next Sunday might take some of the shine off of his birthday. Whenever it is I know it will be very much appreciated.

I loved reading this great tribute to your beloved Father. Was he ever sorry for the fact that you didn't share his passion?
Whatever game is played, when we are only observers it simply isn't fun and with golf it must have cost you great patience as a child to follow your parents around.

Your Father will enjoy this very much no doubt!

I too enjoyed it greatly.

Thanks Margherita,
No, my father was not disapointed, I have 3 older brothers. No, they did not miss me NOT following them around again on any golf courses.  I think they were quite content without my whining and complaining. My dad was never a passionate golfer. But he enjoyed himself when he did get to play.
