Fair to middlin' of nowhere

The only turtles
that I have seen
this year
have been
mangled and mashed
along the side of the highway
That roadkill there
is claimed to be a snapper
that other one a box
and that last mess there
was an armadillo
The armadillo are rare
they came up out of Texas
baled up with the hay
Some survived the cold
and got a small foot hold
But the turtles
are a different
story altogether
It used to be
you'd see box turtles
all the time
As much a part of summer
as June bugs and fireflies
We'd paint our names
on their shells
with fingernail polish
We fed them
lettuce and raw hamburger
Snappers hang out
around water
acting more like
alligators
Looks a little like'em too
They'll bite your finger off
if you're not careful
That's why
they hold'em
by the tail
But like I said
the only turtles
I've seen
so far
this year
are dead

Looks like they would eventually understand that those things that have lights and go very fast on the open space called roads will kill them if they get in their way. I like turtles. Especially in a great big cast iron pot of turtle sauce piquante.

They are too slow to catch on.

You must have plenty down your way if you can find someplace that still makes 'em into soup.

Very sad
I liked turtles too.
My brother had one, when I was 5 or 6.

How sad that all these little creatures are disappearing. We are going to miss them when they are gone more than we know.

Gale my brother had a little turtle in a plastic dish with an island and green plastic palm tree.

By the time we miss all the  "little creatures" it will be too late.
