Running Rooftops

Running ‘cross the rooftops, chased by the local cops,
leaping over buildings with a ninety foot drop.
Freedom keeping blood fired. Chasers getting slow, tired.
I can see the roof’s door across the gravel top.

I go thru its open clear, racing down the winding stair,
jumping three and four steps in descending flight.
Sweat pouring down my face, cops still giving chase.
Air is sweet on the street escaping into night.

I race to the city park, in the dim made of dark,
down a lane, ‘cross a path where the green is grass.
This should be my final caper. Odds against me not in favor.
If I fail, there is no bail and that will be my last.

Then I hear a gun sounding. Pain hits my chest pounding
and I tumble, bleeding liquid on the hardened floor
where I feel my life seeping, creeping from my body leaking
as I lay here, cold and breathless, dead forevermore.

I can feel no heart beating. Memories of my thinking fleeting
back to when I did inflict my crimes of hurt and pain
which is why I cannot languish here compelled by awful anguish
to atone for moments my humanity went insane.

Death is now my waking bell. I repent my sins in Hell
and pay the price each night to play its game which once again
has me running ‘cross the rooftops, being shot by armed cops
and bleeding ‘til eternity says my bleeding’s at an end.
Whoa!

Namyh, please don't misunderstand me.  I really enjoyed your poem and it is very well written and very effective - but the idea of you as a criminal fleeing from the police had me almost doubled up with laughter.

"Death is now my waking bell. I repent my sins in Hell and pay the price each night to play its game which once again..."

I can relate except the jumping rooftops and getting shot at and all like the super heroes but especially the part about waking in hell .... we do die again and again then transform right?  loved it and to this verse, from my own life, I would add this

"and pay the price each to play its game each  which once again ,,,,"

(I find that my enemies are my friends...)

since isn't that what it really boils down to out there? your friends and enemies are one in the same ,,,,

nice work on a hard knocks cut throat topic

JerryPat – It seems that ‘punishment for crimes’ can be found everywhere. It’s in our economy and politics when we screw up. It’s in our religion when we transgress. It’s in our laws when we trespass. And it’s in our guilt when we betray. I just kinda thought I’d write a little about it for kindred poets and others who can relate. Thanks JP. Namyh

Owl – Looking back, it was a real education living and growing up on the streets of a big city listening to the rants of barbers who cut hair, thieves who stole everyday, priests who sermoned Sundays, store owners who worked hard and of course neighbors who told everybody everything about everyone. It was all grist for a growing scribbler of words not inclined for criminal ways. So glad you enjoyed this poem and found it effective. Thanks for stopping in and spendin’ a spell Owl. Namyh
P.S. – Ok guys! Owl’s gone. What time’s the heist! Ha! Ha! Ha!

Very impressive, dear Namyh. You certainly put yourself in the shoes of someone who is conscious of having fallen off the path of rightousness and lives in fear of having "to pay the debt". Karma cleaning so to say.
We are all students of life and we are here to learn to love ... so there is always the time to mend, I am sure.

You described a reality that is only too real for too many. Great work.
