Auction

The old barn reeked of ancient musty walls
Unpainted boards and narrow cattle stalls
Old floors of dirt, some broken twigs of hay
And cherished attic treasures on display

Mementos of the past once heirloom-dear
Drew from my well a sweet nostalgic tear
And memories that surely have more worth
Than all remaining gold upon this earth

A boisterous auctioneer is in command
A wooden gavel firmly in his hand
Too precious are my sacred souvenirs
Still brushed with spider dust and stained with tears

Momentos of the past with which I part
I cherished well with all my aching heart
“Going once, then twice,” he cried,”fair warning all!”
So small a price to pay, so rich a haul

I can’t relive the years already spent
Nor grieve the loss of things that came and went
But I believe I always will recall
When someone bought the greatest prize of all

The last sweet memory harbored in my well
The moment that the wooden gavel fell

Oh Liz....I know this feeling well.  You write so beautifully of the heartache that time and change bring.  Hugs!

I feel a literal pain in my heart while reading this, Elizabeth. So heartfelt and well written.

Liz, this is the third time, I have come back to your poem to reply to it, but the tears are still coursing down my cheeks, and I still don't have the words to describe the beauty of your poem, nor your heartache that I share with you about this.  I wish this wasn't true, but you made it too real, not to be.

Hugs and more tears

Agh... I feel pain in my heart
and spinning in my head,
just thinking about the things that I cherish
and want my family to love too
when I'm gone, but may not.

So well done
Elizabeth Santos,
Ms. E

Dear Lady Santos,

I know this moment well. Its sacred call comes deep from the fell of that auctioneer's gavel.

Bless you.

A most beautiful, poignant emotional write, dear Elizabeth!

Moments of deep involvement that can't be forgotten. Remains the hope that the new proprietor will bring new life and joy to the place. And the memories will linger safely within your heart.

Hugs.

Margherita
