Lifer

The iron bars no longer there,
I sit here in my cell.
Upon the bed, all hope laid bare
In my story to tell.
I had it all, I loved; I lost
My way, with staunch devotion—
Every photo a story tossed
To the hell of emotion.

Where if I bite my skin to bleed,
It don’t mean I will feel.
But sometimes I still feel that need
To make it all seem real.
Still sucking blood don’t warm the heart,
But merely taints the skin
I peel, like some hell-ripened art
That never sheds my sin!

See, prison’s not a place you’re sent,
But one you hail from.
And nothing can slow your descent,
Once you’re set to that drum.
The pipers pipe, the dreamers dream,
But you’re lost to the drone…
Caught up in the rictus of scream,
It’s there you die, alone!

But still Time holds you to a thread,
Its nightmare never-ending.
Although you but wish you were dead,
It’s just your will they’re bending.
Till sanity holds no recourse,
And sunshine vies for shadow.
Till sorrow’s lost to its own source,
And every dream lies fallow.

The iron bars in mind still there,
I sit in my own prison.
The heart stripped bare, it’s too damned fair—
Death by my own derision.
A church bell clang, a song she sang,
It flutters over my soul;
With nothing left to ease the pang,
The truth of it swallows me whole!

As per usual, Michael, you bleed out the words. Yours is a non-stop self-depreciating art form. To be so consistent in your constant and personal put down bodes ill for you ever giving love another shot at making you happy. I hope, sincerely hope, I am wrong.

Powerful emotions deeply expressed, Michael.
One can't help but feel your pain.

I reckon Alison's response of "damn" says it all.

"I peel, like some hell-ripened art
That never sheds my sin!"

I guess ritual plays a part but until we actually believe it's doing what we want it to do it's of no use.

You delve and you write.  Wonderful!
