it went from youth to old age so quickly
I barely had time to catch my breath
from a young man
afraid of nothing
a man who'd break ice to take a swim
I remember passing from that man
into a sort of a dusk
a time of great reflection
but not understanding why that was so
the dusk of my days
were brief but full of wondering and wonderment
still, it did not last very long
until I was thrust
into old age not even prepared
when dusk turned to night
it took awhile
but I have figured it all out
to the point where I am happy
I'm more content
than ever before
and my friend that is amazing
I've no fears of my advancing age
well, except one
that I'll live out my days a prisoner
in an old folks home

I know it is common to have fear and loathing for the dreaded days of the nursing home. The word prisoner says it all. I think we all fear the most becoming prisoners of our decaying minds and bodies.
I think nursing homes have come a long way in improving since most of us got our first impressions of them. Sadly the the state of affairs that leave us clinging to life in an empty shell of a body still exists.

My opinion is that we should have a legal choice to decide when it is time for us to leave our bodies behind. Modern medicine has added many years to our lives...how many more should be up to us.

Thanks for giving me an opportunity to share my controversial opinion.

Happy Father's Day Jerry!

Thank you so much for the Father's Day wish, Lori, and it may be controversial, but I am with you 100% about the our right to "let go."

Yes, life seems just like a lightning between birth and death. You worded this beautifully.

I agree with Lori that nursing homes surely offer more nowadays to entertain old people, while caring for them, but almost nobody likes to stay there. It is tremendously depressing when we become a burden for others and the wish to die before this happens is justified in my opinion. And when the brain is out of use, it gets really tough. In Switzerland they can decide to "exit", but many of the people who sign up for it, when the established moment arrives they reconsider ... What really makes people want to die is when the pain becomes constant.

Sad considerations here, but it is an important theme.

I understand the reconsidering of the wish to die. Life is a precious thing. No matter how much we feel it has passed us by and we really have nothing to live for, when it all comes down to wanting to take that next breath, we do so want to take that breath. Thank you Margherita, for always make me think, and sometimes I, too, reconsider certain things I have written because of your thoughts about it.

You and me share the same fear there, my friend.  Those old folks homes aren't for everybody, that's for sure.  and I never got along well with others anyhow.  I see the peace and happiness your write of, Jer,and though I have a greater sense of peace around me now than almost any other time in my life, it's more of an acceptance than a joyous type.  Probably as close as a man like me will ever get.  Great read, enjoyed the reflections.  I will meet you on the other side.

Hah! Maybe we will meet on the other side at that, Michael, at least Jim Morrison thought that, buddy. Thank you for you comments, they are appreciated.
