Thru Salted Tears

I was King, she was Queen in a land of Pearls.
Science, Art and Reason were gifts we gave the world.
Over 10,000 years, we ruled with tolerance
while the rest of the world was bathed in ignorance.

One day over the horizon, the Ocean Devils came
and our world and our lives would for long lose their Fame.
Lies and deceit they used without care
and their weapon of submission was one called Fear.
Chained to the ship and bolted to its floor,
I almost perished at Death's dark door.

They sold my mammy and sold my pappy,
sold my sis and her two kids.
I stepped up on the auction block.
The man said "Sold" to the highest bid.

I picked cotton and tobacco and peas and corn
in the sun, twenty four seven and dreaded the dawn.
Some were hung. Some were shot. Some were boiled in oil.
Some just gave up and fell and vanished under soil.

When men breathe Gold and Silver
and inhale those smells of Power,
the wind of Reason chokes
and distils a poison sour.

No longer are they Christian.
They've forgotten friend and brother.
Now, Gold is God and rules the day
that enslaves one man to another.

I grimaced and wiped the sweat from my brow and from my face,
knowing this inhumanity to man would one day about face.
Thru salted tears I visioned Africa, my heart, my land, my home
where I was King and saw my Queen atop a sapphire throne;

where sunbaked Pyramids on glistening sand
testify the endurance of God in Man;
where Temple priests of rank and file
poured knowledge in our minds on the banks of the Nile.

The maternal Love in the eyes of our Sphinx
was civilization's progress watched link by link.
These are but a few in our Chain of Fame
when over the sea the Ocean Devils came.

Time chews events and men then swallows,
digesting the pasts of great tomorrows,
gobbling the morsels off future trays
and the crumbs of magnificent yesterdays.

So know that the genes that did make me
and the ones that now make you
are endowed with survival strategies
spanning thousands of centuries true.

For I am the ancestor, anchored within,
speaking heart and mind and sanity
that one fight is the death of all attempts
to dwarf our Humanity.

Amazing writing! I'm not too sure they ruled a thousand years with tolerance, but that is completely beside the point. That they were king and queen was enough to demand respect, and their subjects likewise deserved to not be put in chains and sailed to a strange country where their everyday life was a living hell. Throughout history there has been places which depended on slaves to cook, reap and serve their masters. The sad fact that America became one of those nations is disgraceful. However bad we were for importing human slaves we were on the right side when we fought and freed them. I am very impressed with "Thru Salted Tears."

Truly an impressive work, dear Namyh, masterfully expressed.

We humans possess the tools for a peaceful, fruitful co-existence, but those who successfully use these tools are the minority still sadly.

A powerful reminder to find life's purpose, which certainly isn't the killing of each other.

Ignoring the law of love leads to destruction and humiliation of men's true essence and value.

MUch enjoyed your fantastic write.

This makes me think and feel so many things.  How far we've come.  How far we yet have to go.  It wasn't so long ago that I would have been born the property of someone else. Seen as lesser.  And unfortunately sometimes I know I still am...

This was very good.  It made me feel so much.

JerryP – By the time all the pyramids, Sphinx and temples on the Egyptian planes of Africa had been built, there was no Greece and Rome didn’t even exist. Slavery on the other hand had been around long before Man invented the gods to forgive him for doing it. So very happy this made an impression JP. Namyh

Margherita – As a thinking species, we are indeed capable of meteoric accomplishment and skill. And yet, we can’t seem to get along with the neighbor next door or the one across the ocean. Twenty thousand years of civilization and we still walk right up to the door of annihilation and knock twice to enter. We may be technologically advanced but we are definitely often socially retarded. I like your expression “Ignoring the law of love leads to destruction and humiliation of men's true essence and value.” There’s a lot of wisdom there. Thanks for stopping by to enjoy Margherita. Always good to hear from you. Namyh

Morning Star – We live on Earth, a tiny planet in a small solar system of a universe barely out of its diapers. The learned ones say man is about 7 million years old and that his civilization was only formed in the last 20,000 of those. We’ve only begun to come up from ignorance and haven’t gotten smart enough to become wise yet. We have indeed come far and still have a long way to go, always balancing our wisdom with our ignorance like a seesaw of survival. Thanks for feeling so much from this piece A. Namyh

latearrival – Sometimes the poet must fearlessly step out of the box to see new perspectives that often make the untapped resources inside push those new and different words out into poetic creation, kryptonite against writer’s block or get ready ‘cause you’re about to give birth to a baby poem! Better stock up on pampers! LOL. So glad it was a thoughtful piece for you and thanks for stopping by jo. Namyh

Namyh, your gut-wrenching poem says it all, portraying man's inhumanity to man in all its unbelievable truth.

The eternal true story!
Although it describes the former events, it sounds contemporary. Because still:

"When men breathe Gold and Silver
and inhale those smells of Power,
the wind of Reason chokes
and distils a poison sour."

I can relate to.
But I hope that one day people will realize that it's not money and their power, that rule the World, but ideas! And they will choose the ideas they like more in their souls. And they'll become free from fear, because love is that very thing which is worth of living for, not money and not power.

Namyh, thank you for sharing it.

A beautiful testament this is.  Poignant in its expressions, and its truths.

Blues Serenade – Ahhh Shucks Lori, now you got my head swelling up with your wonderful words and they are appreciated. I enjoy telling good stories that are insightful, captivating and maybe take that one fearless step beyond. It’s in the poet’s blood I guess. So very happy you stopped by so I can hear your serenade. JamesM – Thanks for stopping in for the writing. Glad you enjoyed it. Namyh

Owl – I reiterate that men has been enslaving one another before and since inventing the gods to forgive him for doing it. As you say Owl, it’s the unbelievable truth and it is indeed a historical gut wrencher. I just wanted to write a little bit about it. Thanks for your words Owl. Namyh

Gale – I agree Gale. What separates one man or woman from another is the presence of an idea in one and the absence of an idea in the other and the behavior each exhibits as a result while guided by a moral compass that makes saints when it’s good and tyrants when it’s bad. The dreams of wealth and power and what men will sacrifice to have them is a human hunger unchanged over centuries. Your words make hit home Gale. Thanks. Namyh

Michael – Thanks for your grand words. So very glad you found this poignant along with being a ‘beautiful testament’ too. This was a labor of love with revisions you wouldn’t believe and your enjoyment makes it all worth it. Thanks Michael. Namyh
