Ventriloquists are cool.

They can throw their voices and
make inanimate things,
like dummies,
talk.

My dog talks to me.

He stares at me while I’m eating
and I feel like I need to give him
the last piece of
whatever.

He prefers meat.

Sometimes we just share a cold hotdog.

He wags his tail and gets happy
when it’s time for a walk
and holds the leash in his mouth
as we go through the front door.

On our last walk an old man was fishing.

He caught a catfish
even though the river is hot
with pesticides.

He threw it back.

I swear the ducks with red beaks
are mutants.

They don’t fly
and they stare when you walk by
like you’re dinner.

Probably caused by hot water.

I recall my wife’s friend
(the one who’s ex-husband kept the dogs)
having a retirement dinner.

She said he loved the dogs more than her.

I understood and wrapped up my last piece of T-bone
in a napkin.

Ventriloquists are cool.

A lot of life given to the reader of this piece, Bob. A hodgepodge of the wonder of it all. I particularly like the dog holding his leash in his mouth. But this . . .
quote:
I swear the ducks with red beaks
are mutants

I am positive they are mutants, also those huge geese that you didn't mention because you know they will "get" you if you dared.

Thank you, Jerry and EmmaRose...

Ha! I know what you mean about those "huge geese." They'll eat you up and spit you out for their young to eat.  They're mean! ...and, if they show up, for sure, Harley and I will be taking another path.

...and, yeah, "the twist."  Always a pleasure to show a bit of my Chubby Checker side.

Thanks again, to both, for stopping by.

I felt I was smack dab in a Norman Rockwell painting Bob.  This was a great read.

My dog stares at me too, and I end up giving her the last piece of whatever as well.

Take care.

lol --- very very cute, my friend. My dog looked at me too, when she was alive.  And I didn't have anything to do with her dying . . .
all she got was the bone, I ate the rest.

loved this piece . . . especially the hot ducks.

Your poem is so cool
My dogs talk to me too
And big birds with beady eyes
frighten the beejeezus out of me!
I eat cold hotdogs
Your poem is so cool
