Giving and taking, taking and giving,
I just cool it at night and drink my wine;
What's life all about Cool Hand, this living?
'Spose living is good if you show some spine.
Struggle and work, the tax man will take it,
I'm a poor man, but I don't hate the rich;
I hate the government I will admit,
Seems they wanna keep you down in a ditch.
I struck out at love although I did try,
Worked too, all my natural life here and there;
There were days I knew I was a bad guy,
All in all half my life's been a nightmare.

Afterthought:
Love has at last come, after all these years
Strong and solid, and not just a mere.

The nightmares give way to dreams and sometimes those dreams turn into reality - if it's meant of course.  Still, I do think many of us could quite easily write off half of our lives - we're only human after all.

Unfortunately I concur about writing off half of our lives. Thank you, Helen.

It's good you're able to see, as I am also, at least some of those things in the past that were a real waist of time, working hard so others could get rich, etc. etc, and, now, it seems, at least we're here, taking advantage of the opportunity to express ourselves.  Enjoyed!

I hear you Bob, but actually I never felt that way about the people I worked for over the years. Did I want to make more money? You betcha. If I wasn't satisfied with my job I found another one. Money never was all that important to me, which now that I look back, maybe it should have been. Thank you man for showing up today.

Wasting half our lives...hmmm..yes, I know that is true and you don't have to be bad to do it.  You can just be asleep...trying to escape.

What can I say, Lori? When you're right you're right. Thank you for the visit . . .

I guess life, for most of us, is like good and evil, Jerry, sort of half and half.

That's sorta how I approached the poem, Ida. I have actually had a good life. You might take a look at me now in these declining years and might scratch your head, but I am, happy I am where I am and doubly happy I never had to kill anyone. Come close a few times, but shut the urge down before it could get out of hand. Thank you for checking my poetry out . . .

When our own experiences in this world of duality become the basis for our evolved consciousness and for an increased sensitivity towards others, the apparent waste of time in "being bad" or "asleep" (as Lori points out) transforms into positive "construction material".

And you have constructed well, dear Jerry. Your dynamics have worked well, your talents as a writer confirm this. And Love has come, like a coronation of your work in progress.

Enjoyed this and the beautiful conclusion.

Thank you, Margherita, and good early morning to you. Ah, we live our lives, make our mistakes and near the end we reflect back and hopefully we can smile more than we can frown.
