Fair to middlin' of nowhere

0 posted 2013-05-01 09:01 AM

wheat fields lush as golf greens
intermittent fallow with gray straw stalks
emerald carpet spreading at their feet
winding lines and stands of trees
with whiff of lime branches
feels more like first of March
than the end of April against my face

the familiar vibration
too far ahead to hear
the thunder of the pack
forced fresh air flow  breathing
clinched muscles release relax
taking little stretches crossing railroad tracks

farms slip by few and far between
homesteads wearing their original with a Morton
others like pictures from magazines

roaring through a place called Hope
at 25mph checking out the decades
of design in architectural change
well-kept and maintained strata
museum to my mind

merchants see us as potential cha-ching
town folks get an unexpected parade passing
another set of tracks and we’re gone
to watch the sun and the clouds
battle it out for the afternoon
grateful to catch a break from the
chronic and cursed Kansas wind

Ah, this is so timely, Lori, and thank you for posting it. Progress they say, in an attempt to brush off the decay of the past, but it is still difficult to see what was once vital farms which have been allowed to crumble into dust and memory. Enjoyed this.

Very picture perfect in its depiction of a
place, perhaps not known, which will bring the reader into your world
