The Harbinger

He looked down at the shattered sun,
Endless night having just begun;
Where spoke the harbinger of lies,
From deep within forgotten skies...
A world of sin, a world of wonder,
(The spell that he had fallen under),
There woke his soul to cry, in vain,
Echoed eternities of pain.

The glimmer fading from each shard,
Composure was equally marred.
The restitution for such crime?
Suffering endlessly through time!
No penance paid enough to quell
The hungers of his pitch-black hell,
On darkness, his shadow is cast
In emptiness to ever last...

While detail taints each memory,
Somewhere on that forsaken sea;
With sails that never catch wind—
With Misery his only friend.
Where even sleep denies him rest,
Continuing his dire quest;
As madness slowly eats away
A mind given to disarray.

Where even recall of light fades,
As he's still haunted by the shades
Of yesterday's 'er judging eyes,
And the one voice that never dies!
Once lifted to aspiring dreams,
How quickly it turned into screams!
Love, still strapped to him like a chain,
The archetype of self-disdain.

He struck the sky, all hopes unfound;
To walk, if cursed, once sacred ground—
To blind himself, to bind his hand—
To face forever dark and damned!
But even now, that voice rings clear
Through each abysmally black year.
A siren's song, it wails, it cries...
So speaks his harbinger of lies!

Michael,

Your poetry hits me in the solar plexus.  It's like I get a gut reaction from your words.  Few do that to me.  I always seek your poems out - and I am glad that I did.  This is one of your best, in my opinion.  It's a keeper.

Thank you for writing and sharing.

Damn fine writing, Michael. You manage to spell out the lonely world many live in with fantastic rhyme and darkness within. I'm with Alison, this is a keeper.

Tremendous write, Michael.  I also always seek out your poems but sometimes I'm so lost in them that I don't break the spell to comment.  My apologies for that because your offerings are always extremely captivating and certainly deserving of praise even from such a "lowly" one as me.

Alison, I’m not sure getting hit in the solar plexus can be considered a good thing, but I do appreciate the compliment.     I’m glad you enjoyed.

Jerry, This entire poem was just a tribute to that little voice in my head I know better than to listen to, but always seem to listen to anyway.  I think we all our misled by that voice at one time or another.  Glad you enjoyed.

Helen, I don’t know why you would consider yourself “lowly.”  You’re certainly not in my eyes… nor am I one to be exalted.  I’m glad you seek out my poems, if not so glad that you can relate to them… just by the dark nature they tend to encapsulate.  I certainly have enjoyed much of your work for the very same reason, however.

Thank you all,

Michael

I somehow seem to know the darkness you capture so well with your beautiful and haunting visuals Michael.  It is always a sincere pleasure to read your words.

Best wishes,
/Kit
