The Board

Take a look upon the board...
Do you use magic or a sword?
Is it by cunning or by wit
You hold a man like me forfeit?

Or is the heat of battle where
You choose to grant me my despair?
By sheer prowess, and aptitude,
What is the outcome you conclude?

Do you view yourself as a king?
Or merely just an underling?
When decisions are executed,
Is who’s in charge ever refuted?

When you strike out, whose thoughts are drawn?
Are you just someone else’s pawn?
The answer’s right before your eyes,
Though most will never realize...

That even kings can serve that roll,
Never questioning their own soul;
Or seeing there’s more to this game
Than the final man standing’s name.

We play, whether we know or not.
For in the end, we all are caught
By the desire incarnate
Intrinsic to our human state.

The fact there’s more than one game here
Never brings pause – rarely dawns clear,
Till by passions, ever compelled,
Even the mightiest are felled.

Still, some can see beyond this board,
And there they have their just reward...
Their true opponent’s eyes displayed,
Revealing to them we’ve all been played.

Hah! A good one, Michael. It's just one big circle-jerk, isn't it? You called it right when you alluded to the differences of games being played out on The Board, and the last man standing is but only one of those games. A hellofa lot to read and speculate about buddy, so much so that I will save this one to the library. Don't know how I missed this one.

At least a couple meanings to 'been played' makes your poem quite intriguing... Personally, knowing in part who the opponent is, I think, when we look beyond 'the board' (the game plan) and beyond the point of playing in the game and to the point of looking back, that, definitely, we'll know, as your poem delivers, the lies and deception of which we've all been subjected. Enjoyed!
