Fangs

The night’s silent, the air is still,
And still there lingers a cold chill.
As something in the darkness seems
To exist, beyond realm of screams.
A dream perhaps, a miscreant
Wandering the bleak night, deviant…
Shadow to shadow, drawing near,
It’s not the dark that you should fear.

For I cut my teeth in that dark,
Not sure which left me a worse mark.
Sure, I can bleed a mortal soul,
But never again will walk whole…
Or bask beneath a morning sun
That would leave me clearly undone,
And so I cringe, as hinges groan,
Closing coffin to sleep alone.

But as the grandfather clock clangs,
To mark a night reserved for fangs;
Darkness, itself, opens the portal
On the road to becoming immortal.
Oh, blissful child of innocence,
Do you not even feel the suspense?
Your worst nightmare set on your bed –
Love of your life turning you undead…

To sail the murk, forever free,
Maker of your own destiny…
Till the emptiness claims you too –
You start to long for something new.
Against the house, silhouette drawn
For just an instant, then it’s gone;
As having invited you inside,
Your victim has no place to hide.

But there, the prisoner is freed...
Born of that insatiable need,
As the wolf’s howl fills the night sky,
Greeting sentience to never die.
A blood-seeker – bloodthirsty land,
It couldn’t be any more well planned.
Unto this blight of coldness thrown,
Welcome to eternity alone.

Yippee! Vampires crowd your mind these days, and I, for one, am very happy to see this. Your style of writing is perfectly attuned for the Dracula crowd. I don't know if you've ventured into the fanged demons before, but I don't recall any by you. But you have opened the gates of an undead hell with this one. Excellent!!!!!

I’m glad you enjoyed this, Jer.  I actually wrote this back in November… didn’t really know how it would be appreciated by the new vampers running around these days.  I don’t know, it just seems to me there’s a little too much romanticizing and plasticizing, and not enough “dark” left in the whole vampire thingee these days.  I blame Hollywood.  Anyhow, this is my first crack at a vamp poem.  I have written about werewolves many times… I believe my true calling would be down that avenue.

Good to see you Ms E.  Where have you been?  Glad you liked it as well.

I agree, Michael, they have definitely taken the dark out of the vampire genre. Yep. Werewolves, rather than vampires is really more up your alley, darker even than the vampire. I wrote one vampire novel called Unholy Pursuit, a couple of years ago.

Yes! Agree, quite a contrast here to the new Hollywood, relational, romantic typical vampire. Enjoyed!
