I am crushed by how hard this is.
The way you permeated my life and my being was so natural.
So slow. So soft. So cumulative. So beautiful.

I was helpless to prevent it,
Now I am helpless to destroy it,
even though that is what I have to do.

So once again, I lay myself at your feet:
This time, cut yourself out of me because I can't do it to myself.

Here is my head:
open my skull and pierce my brain!
For it's our connection here that made me fall in love with you in the first place
Sever the pathways and rewire my neurons;
You can no longer be a destination for all of my thoughts.

And here is my chest:
Tear it open and peer into my heart.
See how you're entwined around every artery and every ventricle?
See how the way you make me feel has filled every atrium
So it beats faster and harder and somehow happier?
Now unravel it all and pull it all out
Apparently it's all born of an unrequited love that will choke it if you don't.

And just over there- can you see my lungs?
Notice the spot where my breath would catch
whenever you smiled that smile I'm still certain you smiled only for me?
Or whenever I surprised you and your eyes sparkled with light that could only come from your soul itself?
Fill it in and destroy it
You can't have that effect on me anymore

And my eyes? Dig out the tear ducts.
I can't cry anymore over you
And my veins? Slice them open.
Sieve yourself out of every droplet of blood that you've somehow managed to infuse.

I wish I could ask this of you
As a final, morbid tribute to the end of a near perfect friendship
A friendship that I destroyed by loving you too much

But I know what your response will be if I asked:
That you're not qualified to perform this kind of surgery
That there is only one surgeon who is
And his name is Time
Too bad he has an indeterminably long waiting list.

The soul would have no rainbows, had the eyes no tears.

Very comprehensive and telling list of procedures you require you lost lover to perform, Rainbowdust. I like the dark take on this, because it is something most people who read it can identify with. I sure did.

Your poem gives a comprehensive and heart wrenching visual of how truly two become one through relationship and how extremely intensive it can and/or should be to break away. This was very well written. Enjoyed!

Years ago, I too would  be tortured by so called LOVE like this, as you vividly create, I remember through this detailed poem, a feeling I didn't like much, though it makes for terrific poetry. Much liked

You have captured the feelings of heartbreak with raw and vivid imagery. I enjoyed the closure you obtained regarding the qualified surgeon being "time". Well done Rainbowdust.

Best wishes,
/Kit
