The measure of music
plays in the recess of my mind
the clarity of words
are a chorus of voices
rewriting the melody
in other words
to a rhythm
so long ago.

A song of wine and roses
and lyrics sung in a whisper
catch in my throat
memories float to the surface
skirting across the pond
tears of joy and sorrow
fall like shimmering stars
shedding light
through the crevices.

A shadow dances beneath the moon
your smile tilts just so
cradled in the crescent
filtering the light like a buffer
softening
the endless surround sounds.

As the music strums my heart strings
like a crescendo builds
a choir in perfect harmony fades
love sings a solo.

Instrumentals carry over
in the still of the night
rocking me gently
as the chorus of your laughter
rewinds
keeping tempo
to the words that might have been.

The old song . . .
quote:
that might have been.

has a new voice in the words of this well-written poetry, Lori . . .
