Wheels of time

The wheel turned, no effort, as the water flowed
Behind stone walls the shafts and pulleys gently wheezed
Girl’s hands once soft hardened now by cotton thread
The finest fibres danced in shafts of rare sunlight
Their stomachs growled, clogs and shawls, looms spin despair
Those cobbled stones, green river banks, where once she played
The darkest hour before the dawn work will call
Don’t wake the babe, just warm your hands upon the cup
Too soon a woman as childhood flies away
Till Sunday and time to roam high whimberry moors
Tranquil fields below, too soon, will be no more
From industrial seeds in Dales the chimneys grow.

Nicely done Michael...the hands and the face tell a story of life...enjoyed.

Awesome opening, my friend, and followed perfect to the end ... very much enjoyed it.

You portray so much here...a hard and fleeting life and moments captured and held close.

Your poem comes to life and has much empathy and compassion.

Very nice introspection. The wheel is said to be the greatest invention, but, for me,  especially your line...

quote:
Tranquil fields below, too soon, will be no more

... gives a nice opposition to that thought.
