She just lost her mother that night
and her arms fell below her waist
like a small dogs lost chirp at the nights
bright side of a wrong nights stay
at the midnight run around

Her mother moved into
a small apartment
next to where the downtown
faced the cities river

Blonde, shattered locks
with her eyes like a small brigade
of the green pastures
that sailed behind her home

She was only 25
but thats when she
conceived little Emily

With her same green, blue eyes
tasting the air as she came to breathe
for the very first minutes
of her seasoned life that lay ahead

But, today, it all came to a head
her mother no longer under her arms
no longer cooking the dinners ripe roast
She's not coming back home today,
maybe Emily will run to the edge
of a land that rests with simple ease
and a peace,
quiet strokes that touched
her lonely face like the ribbons
that stood across an empty hallway
as she waited with empty scissors
to finally cut herself to another wing

A dream
that her mother could once again bring her arms
around her soft waist
and rest her hands against the palm of the night
so it, too, could watch her fall asleep
just as her mother would do
for the rest of their lives.
