It may be a bitter pill to swallow
    As the truth sometimes is
But that won't change the facts

Although I tried to absolve myself
Saying,
    This isn't what I wanted
I didn't choose this for myself

I liked to imagine myself at the whim
Of the cruelest of masters
    Chance and circumstance

Saying to myself
This was thrust upon me
    By those with the power
    And the right
To make these types of decisions

The justifications
    And the whitewashing
Continued for quite some time

But in truth,
    In all truth
When my time came
    As everyone's always does

I didn't choose anything else

And even though
I would have liked to tell myself otherwise
In order to maintain my illusion of
    nonaccountability

Not choosing
Is a choice
    In and of itself

When you said this . . .
quote:
Not choosing
Is a choice
    In and of itself

. . . you put the power of choosing or not choosing into your own hands.

I so liked this poem. You played with words the way words are supposed to be played with. Congratulations on a fine poem.

Thank you Jerry!  Just trying out a new brutal honesty and self reflection. We'll see how it goes...

Some things are very very difficult to wrap our heads around and really do take extra concentration and time to sink in before they become, um, "reality" and, um, yeah, whew, especially those things we're "expected" to be accountable for. I liked your transparency here.
