The evening mists began at 5pm
Now it is 8pm, and we are surrounded.
The rain is knocking on the gutters,
but we won't let it in.
To many years in this house that is the problem.
We are often mistaken for wallboard.
Can we help it if our heads
are turning to knotty-pine?
The children grew up and moved away,
quite unexpectedly, must have been when
weren't looking.
And who gave them permission to do that
anyway?
In the silence my wife turns to me and says,
"I'm glad we have hardwood floors."
Seems like an odd thing to say you know, so I just
nod my head and say "Yep."
The three of us are looking out our window
into the gloom, The three of us: myself, my wife and,our cat.
Suddenly the cat: Mr. Peapers, jumps to the window,
and stares intently, muscles tight, ready to spring.
Okay, I think, whats next?

I really enjoyed reading that. Alot of people can relate to empty nest syndrome.I know I can.
Keep writing and God bless you and your wife as shes lucky to have you by her side.

I absolutely LOVE this!  The three of you are very lucky indeed  - no, not lucky, you have earned and deserve each other.  How wonderful to see people (kitty people always do, though) valuing EXACTLY what they have!

The three of you have made my day - and what a superbly written poem, too!  It was its excellence that brought all of the above home to me.  It is not what I was expecting at all from the title - which makes the title so very, very apt and excellent!

I can't wait to read more about your family, including Mr Peapers.  (Though an owl, I am neither the predator nor the prey of cats - I have an excellent understanding and relationship with them all.)

Giggles!  No wonder you write so well.  When I saved your poem to put in my newly created Duck folder in my Pip folder, I see that your real name (or nom de plume?) is Robert Bridges!  Your namesake would be proud to share his name with you!
