I've tied up all those loose ends,
My bridges I have burned.
I've even kept a record,
Of lessons I have learned.

For my past indiscretions-
I never will atone.
So I have made my mind up-
To run my race alone.

I've always been a loner,
Even in a crowd.
And I don't need all my fingers-
To count those I've allowed...

To penetrate my armor,
To really know my heart...
Distance is no object,
I have always dwelt apart.

But a few sweet, cherished memories-
Like faded photographs,
Are locked away within my heart-
Mementos of the past.

Nice poem, Gunslinger.
I do like how you turn a phrase.
I'd like to be a loner too, but it's hard to do when a fella has a wife, three kids, four grandkids, and three great-grand kids.
Partner, it's is way to late for me to be a loner.
So I will just have to read your hard-luck poems and use my imagination.
Delightful poem Tex, keep them coming

Resentment and regret are a hard poison to swallow, but sometimes embracing the future and abandoning ties to the past is harder.  I don't l know why letting go of something terrible is hard, but it always is. You think it wouldn't be that way.
