I was thinking; that’s a dangerous course,
Especially as we age.
And struggling with the faded lines-
I’ve written on life’s page.

And names began to cross my mind-
And those forgotten faces,
And memories I thought were dead,
Of distant climes and places.

My family all came to call,
Grandparents, Dad and Mother…
And him I guess I miss the most-
My younger, only brother.

Recalling past mistakes I made…
Deep depression brings:
Alas, I’d fly to distant shores-
If only I had wings.

I’d like to wipe the whole slate clean,
Begin afresh, anew-
Ad rather than a life of lies-
I’d live one that was true.

I guess that always is the case,
When old men get to thinking…
And likewise likely it explains,
The reason they start drinking.

I enjoyed your poem and its wry Gunslinger-humour and that of its title, very much, John.

Whilst I know the poem is NOT mine, that isn’t going to stop me sticking out my ostrich neck and saying what I would like, in all friendliness, to say – and that being that if it WERE  mine, I would have made just one change  – and that being, instead of “I’d like to wipe the whole slate clean” to “I am going to wipe the whole slate clean”.  I know THEY say (and THEY are welcome to) that life starts at 40.  However, I say that life starts whenever you want it to.  In my case, that is pretty much (OK, with a very large give or take) every day, and that means for me at 67 years and 2 months to the day, something like 67 X 365+61 =  24516 times – lucky me!  Maybe that is why I haven’t got anywhere, starting over so many times, lol!

Yes thinking is (wryly) dangerous, but it is great fun, gratifying, rewarding, gives refreshing and unexpected insights (and punishing, lol!).  It gets me into trouble almost every day, but hey!  it gives me so many more rewards than punishments, and hey again!  life is a challenge, and challenges are fun to overcome (most of the time, lol!), and when they aren’t fun, they are rewarding to rise above.  Perhaps I am just too stoopid (or brave or naive or pig-headed or happy?) to stop being me and enjoying one of my most longstanding and favourite pastimes of all times, “thinking”!  Thank you for the opportunity to indulge yet again, in the delights – and dangers! – of thinking!

Your poems have a timely message, and your endings always give me a little chuckle.

Good to see you posting, cowboy!

John, I can always relate to your words. And I especially enjoy your sense of rhyming which is almost sing-song to me as I read you aloud.

Aging really is not that much fun when  you reflect back on all the losses or wish to share with those no longer here. And of course holidays and anniversaries  seem to bring those to the forefront.

I am trying to live in the moment and be positive...

wishing the same for you , always.
