THE POWER THEY HOLD
21  November 2012

They are the velvet of the night sky
on which to hang star sparkles
and the sharpened blade
of a murderer’s knife.

They are the sun’s balm
on troubled shoulders
and the ice agent
of hypothermia.

They are the compassion
that smiles the heart
and the blow
that fakes and deadens feelings,
thoughts and aspirations.

They are the inspiration
that motivates and liberates
and the emprisonment
of spirit and breath.

Count them,
as you count your money,
for they are a precious gift,
more powerful than nuclear warfare,
more delicate than a butterfly’s wing,
and pay them with forethought,
these powerful tools,
of growth and happiness
and death and destruction,

these things,
these words.

it's such a grand-fine pleasure to 'read' someone who can truly 'write' ...

typically excellent 'penning!' ...

Whew, Bruce!  That is indeed high praise from a poet of your calibre!  Thank you.  I will treasure your words, and they will ring in my ears for a long time to come.

Thank you, Blues, for your beautiful reply.  I particularly love people thinking I am wise.  Happy New Year to you and yours too!

Wise and wonderful poem, Diana. Reminds me of one of my favorite quotes. "By words the mind is winged."

Oh, Ida, that quote is exquisite.  I will remember that.  Thank you for that and your very kind words about the poem and me.

When it comes to love and nature, life and how to live it without regret. And how to put it all into words that show it all. You hit the top of the chart. Best to you, jo

Wowweee, Martyjo!  You take my breath away with what you said!  I can hardly take it all in.  Thank you.  I am honoured to hear that from one as wise and as worthy and as excellent a poet, as you are.  I am certainly not putting this into words very well, lol!
