They met under the canal
of the eastern city
with the alcoves and cobbled streets
intersecting one another
as the musicians played alongside
with her feet on the fringes of his toes
and her lips, like a bit of the cold
wildfire on the set of the open space

The large winded staircase
that rose up towards the ringing bell
with the charcoal ceilings
thousands of years
of left behind marks etched in and out
with sanded footprints, like faded stories
spread across the chalky floor.

So many people have come and gone before
but in Bruges
we come and see the canals
the swans swimming along the current

The small coves of hotels
run by a woman who has her belly slightly bigger than usual
pregnant, blissful,
In Bruges
they say the night comes before the day
for its a different line of events

They hold a small littany of tables
all in rows
for people to drink and enjoy the coffee and tea
its at night
where the alcoves become exceedingly more vibrant
with shadows against the cobbled streets
and the rich texture of sweaters and dresses
that line the city lights

Its under the heels of a woman
that a night dresses the canals
with their overpass bridges
and soft music echoing off the soft wake
of water and the stillness of cologne
that wafted through the city streets

They say in Bruges
the feel of a woman's slow heart
fades the color of the cobbled street a bit more
but its a slow crawl back to the sunrise
its a slow ride back to the shaded streets
and each time, they heard the last legs of a heart
they heard a small road lose its small, cobbled street corner

I have never been to Belgium, Tomer, let alone Bruges . . . well, not until now.  I was very taken with its beautiful quaintness, its cobbled streets, its architectural, humanitarian and romantic history delicately, yet proudly, woven into every inch of its reality.  I am so glad there wasn't a photograph.  It would have interfered with the breathing beauty of the poem.  Thank you for my travels tonight.
