Staying Awake (11:59)

Waiting for a call
feathers and leaves soften the fall
this aftermath is harder without you here
San Francisco is about to disappear
still waiting
staying awake
watching the shadow and the light's unholy mating
we are the last to arrive at love
we are the last to survive at 11:59, and love
yeah love is the razor's edge I'm not afraid to walk along
with you

Movement in the sky
lips shiver but I do not hear the cry
this afterglow is easier when you're around
tapping the phone and hitting the ground
still moving
staying awake
stare down dawnlight into shards perfect for carrying
inside caverns and boxes of love
inside, away from rainfall of 11:59, oh love
yeah love is the abandoned house, webbing stuck on me
and you

You have shaped the night to fit your needs
and the rivers run, the rivers run
at a speed beyond my ability to bleed
it couldn't get more grey than this

Waiting to feel full
wires sway like eyelashes in the cold
this ever after is smoothed out by your smile
San Francisco sadness all the while
is still waiting
staying awake
watching this ungodly burden's sacred leavetaking
we are the last to taste this love
we're the lasting impression at 11:59, and love
oh love is the blindness I'm happy to suffer from looking
at you

I have slid down the surface of tears tonight
and I'm numbed, I'm numbed by lust
unable to fight the seeping of ugly pure light
it doesn't get more grey than this

Still awake,
cut into the arms of impending midnight
but I'm staying awake
watching the shadows overtake the light's precious skin
you and me are the last to arrive at love
you and me are the last to arise by midnight in love
yeah love is the razor's edge I'm not afraid to cut my dreams
into bite-sized pieces to share
with you
and you
you have shaped my mind to fit your light
and the rivers run, the rivers run
at the velocity of a rose bled to be yours tonight
it shouldn't get more grey than this

Staying awake
to kiss the face of frozen fire daybreak.

SD, this poem has such a tragic feel to it, such a moment of holocaustic dread, I applaud you! Wow! I relived moments of the Twilight Zone, the horrific moments of bomb shelters and "drop, cover, roll" moments. I pray your poem does not come true, other than to bring your love to you.
