My bestfriend Dianne asked me
to go to a New Years Eve party with her
and her family. It was my first
New Year's Eve party.
We were only eleven, still in pony tails
and bobby sox. The party
was with the Alcoholic's Anonymous group.
Her father was a member.

After arriving I recognized some of the people.
I saw my second grade teacher, Miss Miller.
and a couple of kids I knew with their parents
and some of my neighbors.

It was the only place in town where
there wasnt any alcohol that night.

The next thing I noticed was a little dark room
with a television. My favorite show was playing, American Bandstand.
We walked in and sat down and we stayed there watching
our teenage idols.
The regulars on the show, Frannie Geordano,
the pretty blonde and Carol Scataferi, the
pretty brunette were my favorites.
When Frannie was slow dancing she always
winked at the camera.

Frannie and Carol were dressed in beautiful gowns
and looked like princesses,
in their tiaras.

I wanted to wear pale pink lipstick and make up like them,
but everytime my dad saw me with lipstick he would
tell me to take it off in his stern voice.

I saw Justine, another platinum blonde ,
and her boyfriend Bob Clayton.
They were from Delaware just like us.
We were excited when we saw Paul Bell too as he
was another Delawarean. We only lived an hour
from Philly where bandstand aired. Paul ended up dating
Dianne a few years down the road and
he was a Deejay at my wedding.

I wanted to go on bandstand
and get in line and talk on the mike to Dick Clark.
I wanted to say,
"My name is Victoria and I'm fifteen and I'm from Delaware.
and tell Dick,
"that song is easy to dance to and it has a good beat."

While all the members  were drinking their sarsaparilla's,
Dianne and I did our thing. We didnt bother anyone, and we
didnt want anyone bothering us.

I fell asleep before midnight. Dianne woke me
and it was time to leave.
On the way home, I sat in the car
just wishing for the day I was a teenager, and I
looked forward to watching bandstand after school on Monday.

I had a great time at the Alcoholic's Anonymous party.
The only thing is nobody was anonymous anymore.
I knew them all.
Since everyone I knew was there, I thought about asking my Dad to join too, and making
it just not anonymous but unanamous.

Wonderfully written, my friend.  I remember many in my youth that should have been members too ... some also family.  Luckily, though, none were abusive or dangerous, except one dad with his daughter . . . the dad got a bullet for his trouble, and no one knew who pulled the trigger.

Gee, I'm just happy to hear I inspire something in somebody - and, of course, having you be the "inspire e" makes it all the sweeter!!

Smile, my friend . . . and light my day...
