Listening to every heart

Blackie

You took me in as a kitten
and left me with an unusually common name
Blackie
simply because your brother and sister
liked it.

I came the same day as that
overgrown puppy,
Tippy
and he pawed, and I scrapped, but that
night, I slept on his belly
and we tolerated with the idea
of being
tolerable.

It wasn’t but about a year later,
long after I had learned to mouse
in the fields, and would only show up
for obligatory strokes, when
you moved away.

I remembered your cries, calling me,
while I stalked a small hare,
but you scared him away.

Your father said he would come back
for me, but the van was packed.
You were moving just three miles away
and I really was a country
cat.

Your father didn’t tell you
Until you were a bit older,
but he checked on me
every week, until new people moved
into that old house,
and they said they would feed me
if I ever came to the door.

He explained how I would keep the gophers
and other rodents at bay.
And I did.

But I remembered your stroke, and headed
out one day, in search of you.
I didn’t see the car.

Still, I found you.  I came to your door,
those three miles away from where
I last saw you, two years after
you moved, and howled at the door.

You let me in, crying my name, knowing me
immediately, but I went to your parents’ room,
crawled under their double bed
and died from internal injuries.

I had only wanted to feel the love
of a family
again.

You were all so good to me.  I had been gone
two years, and gave me unconditional love
even after I had died.

Some months later, I visited you.
Remember?

I came down the hallway, through the kitchen,
stroked past your legs, then out the back door,
which was closed.

You stood there like stone, I’m not sure what you
thought.  It was time to leave, I wanted you to
see me go, as good as I ever was.

Tippy was on the other side, and I said goodbye,
and he barked.  Remember?

You were sure you were just dreaming,
or doing that thing, what did they call it, fancy thinking?
But I saw your mother, too, and she came in,
and asked if you had seen anything come by.
The tone of her voice was gravely serious,
and you answered honestly,
speaking my name, Blackie.

She nodded.  She had seen me, too.

You’ve never forgotten me.
After that, you began writing, remember?

Karilea you have me convulsed in gut-wrenching sobs.  Can't think straight or say much right now.  Blackie and Tippy are with my Flicka and Tigger and Daisy in Heaven.

As only you can do.
Very unique.  But that is you.

A tug at the heartstrings,

a poem is a sigh
a melody of song
a musical lullaby
