I was called on today
a service to perform
why was I called upon
because I am good with animals
I'm not proud of what went down today
but for months stray cats
have infested where I live
under the houses
under cars
stirring up Zoe and Rustee
the landlord's Dachshund
sigh . . .
I knew where they liked to hide
under the big house
I went there
sat on a chair in the patio
called, kitty, kitty, kitty
hoping the large yellow cat would emerge
it being the biggest trouble maker
it stalked Zoe
I called and called and I called
sure enough I saw yellow fur
peeking from under the house
but it wasn't the big cat
this one was half cat, half kitten
slowly, but surely
it inched from under the house
I kept calling, kitty, kitty, kitty
it kept coming
soon it was between my legs
rubbing on them and purring
I picked it up
it needed food
but I was on a mission
as I stroked the kitty
it purred so loud
I'm sure I'll hear it in my dreams
when I was sure
it was okay to stand with her
I stood and waked to where another man was waiting
gave kitty to him
they got in a truck and left
don't know what happened to the kitty
didn't want them to tell me
but I do know one thing
for a few minutes
that kitty loved me

Hopefully some little child will get a new kitty for Christmas. Good one Jerry.

Jeeze Jerry, I was dreading every line. The more I read, the less I wanted to know... But you did it again with the perfected twist at the end. You left me with a warm smile and a real appreciation for what you did. Nice way to start my day, thank you my friend.

If I started your day off in a good way, Lori, it puts a smile on my face. Thank you for that.

Wow, this one hits you square in the gut.  You did what was best for all parties I'd like to think... but even if it turns out not to be the case, you definitely did what you had to.  Three cheers for a happy Zoe.

This made me cry, Jerry. Sometimes a good poem can do that.
