sometimes what's behind a gift
means more than
the gift itself
when unexpected gifts come our way
we're likely to be embarrassed
don't know what to say
it's only afterward
as we sit thinking it over
that we understand
we've been given something
very precious
the gift
the gift is what it is
but it's the feeling behind it
that makes it an overpowering, personal thing
which everyone should feel
at least once in their life
it's like Santa Claus to an innocent child

This is so true. I like watching the persons face when they see the gift. Especially if they like it. I stopped buying for my husband as he never likes anything ha.

A poem is never finished, only abandoned.

Yeah, the surprise is everything, I guess. Your husband likes you I'll bet. Thank you for your input

Gifts from the heart are always the best and often free! It is the thought behind it that counts

Hi Lori, you are so right, sometimes a surprise gift gets me all tongue-tied and I don't know what to say. Thank you for being here.

Some very true sentiment to this one.  It's what lies behind that gift that has the power to alter perception, invoke emotion, and change lives... though, sadly, some people don't realize it till the giver's no longer around to thank, if they reach that point at all.  Please forgive my cynicism.  It has no place here.  Beautiful thoughts.

this is beautiful, especially at this time of year when 'giving' has become so perverted

"the gift is what it is

So true.  Seems as if that sentiment has faded a bit.

Enjoyed, Jerry!!

Yeah, this time of the year motivated me to write this one, Ida. I have quit posting here for a while, and although when I get an email informing me I have had a comment on one of my poems, I can't just ignore it. I hope you have a wonderful Christmas season, my friend.

I love the poem. My pastor loved the gift I gave her and started to tear up. She was very happy just as I'm happy reading your poetry. Happy Holidays

What makes a gift precious is thought behind it.
