I've jumped up high, forward
and now I'm waiting for my feet to hit the ground (one second, two, three, more) and
my breath is taken away
by the view, the wind in my hair,
the rush of the earth towards me.

It's exhilarating,
this leap into the unknown and it's
terrifying.
I thought it through
(a bit) before I jumped, but now
I'm just falling and there's no place for thoughts in this blur of life
and with this view.

I'm hurtling closer and closer to
where I jumped towards,
towards the ground, from where I may never rise again
(or where my feet will touch ground, softly, and my heart will swell with confidence and I'll carry on jumping and exploring).

My fellow South African, I do so hope that your jump will be where your "feet will touch ground, softly, and" your "heart will swell with confidence and" you'll "carry on jumping and exploring."

However, there are not only 2 possiblities.  There are multitudinous shades of both and a blended both.  The important thing is, that, you cling on to the essence of that line in one of Frank Sinatra's songs - and that you "pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and start all over again."  In my 67 years, there are sooooooooo many times that I have had to do that, in a wide variety of circumstances.  It is usually not easy, but often easier than one imagines it is going to be.  That first step, is the hardest.  And, yes, I am an inveterate optimist (well, I am hardly ever pessimistic), but a realist at the same time - and that combination is like a fresh mountain spring that puts an indomitable bounce back in my spirit and has been my saving grace in what has so often felt, at the time, like the direst circumstances.  I wish the same for you, Dawn, with all my heart.

There is a certain exhilaration one gets jumping somewhere they've never been before.  I've always been partial to bungees but then, I guess I've never had the sensation of the feet landing in that uncharted territory.  I do hope your landings are soft ones.

Most of my jumping, other than in sports in high school, was off house roofs playing cowboys and Indians.  How I didn't kill one of the Indians landing on him I'll never know ...
today such things would be outlawed by the establishment and signs hung saying jumping is injurious you your health, and they would deny you pain pills (in Calif. anyway) for your injuries.  Funny, back then, there was none of that, the problems only came when  so-called do-gooders began thinking they had to control every breath one takes otherwise one would die from lack of air.

Take me back to the old days ... I was free in America then.

Sorry about the soap box...didn't start out that way...enjoyed your write...

Thank you all so much for your comments!
Owl SA, thank you for your advice. I don't have that many years of experience myself, but I know that you're right. I'll be falling again many times in my life, and the best I can do is get back up and try again each time.

Smiles.  I am glad to hear about the "get back up and try again each time."
