the blank page
not unlike a deserted road
the page
is there for you to spin your magic
write your poem
for a better tomorrow
the road
likewise is there for you to run
hanging thumb in the wind
hoping for good luck, knowing you won't find it
you spend time writing on the page
even as you are putting
miles behind you and your horrortown
breathing agreeable air
that comes from each mile of freedom
you put behind you and
home sweet (not)home
the tumultuous weather conditions
a distant remembrance of home
a hollowing inside my chest
cause me to think
once again
of home . . . a place of small town secrets . . .
a place to run screaming from
and write words on napkins
while you're slurping your coffee
a long way from horrortown

Yeah, used to really like that blank page (bar napkins for your drink to sit on ) --- I wrote so many things on them back in my drinking days.... you know... a poem for a beer, or a really "sweet" poem for several beers, and an invite for the evening...

Wish now I could have at least a few of those back, not the originals, they were meant for the person they were given too ... but I'd sure like a copy.

Then again, their "life" was in the one of a kind uniqueness...

loved the write,

j.

You give much life to that sanctuary a poet feels where he can best express.

Thanks J. One particular night comes to mind concerning the napkin and a barmaid (we called them that back then). There were others, of course, but she comes to mind just now. A wild joint in Bossier City, Louisiana called Blues Red Devil. I'm smiling as I recall it.

Good morning EmmaRose, and thank you for stopping, reading and commenting on my poetry. Poets write of life around and inside of them, I can do no other.

I wish I could have read some of those napkins. Big tips for the bartender im sure.
Nicely done Jerry.

Thank you, Victoria. Yeah, those napkins. Some were written about barmaids. Some were impressed enough to show their appreciation. Some were badly written, hate-filled angst directed toward my mother.
