POPPIES IN THE WIND

So slowly as the sun did rise
Across November fields
Like sentinels new windmills stand
Would Don Quixote yield

A baby blue and pink tinged sky
But in the west still dark
And by the stream the tree still stands
Their names etched in her bark

First autumn frost and summer lost
Soon cold within the bones
And falling leaves so golden brown
The eastern wind just moans

A poppy day remember them
Their names etched in the stone
Whose mother’s son was lost that day
And did they die alone

A trumpet sounds and village bells
Ghost child plays on the green
That childhood lost in foreign fields
Those trenches now serene

So many years are mem'ries lost
Are poppies worn with pride
And on the cross the roll call grows
Does pain leave like the tide
