On Tracing

What is left, then, when withered-blue tendrils
still cling, but roots are gone, cold and buried,
after once when we were
genetically inclined when all
was warm, but now,
now that all is November      remembered,
what is left             in print and time?

Memories are riling, storming under
some cloud’s vindictive, pounding rain,
while once before thundering skies left
you and me to find our own hands
in some space without room,
moving in pant o’ mine, taking up
a piece of parchment,
lead pencil, and je ne sais quoi….

we went to the window, you, and I,
placing thin skinned paper toward the
glazed glass of rain-pelted hoary glow
then eyed one another for whose hand
should be traced, around each finger, up
down, carving, curving around
scars and nails deep into the length
of grasp, to have and to hold,
from this day forward, a way
to live forever, and if we had found a way
to carve in the veins, we could have,
should have.

You won.

So did I.

You are correct, Karilea, some things are difficult to express. However, I think you charmed the difficulty out of this one and expressed yourself quite well here.

Glad you dug this one back out K.  I can remember some very similar tracing episodes from what seems like a past life.  Some very good memories nonetheless.  Thank you.

This is stunning.  I had to read it
several times, and will again.
Really enjoyed mulling over your words
and the thoughts you put together.

I remember this although je ne sais quoi purquois. It's still wonderful.

A poet must leave traces of his passing not proof.

Keth, because, my dear, just because...

JL...stunning...wow. It's like a deer being hit with a blank, falls, and finds out it can run again if it just gets back up on its feet. Thank you....

Michael, past lives and reflection...can be good for all of us...I read some of my works from way back and you should only be in my mind for those moments!

2ndhanddrmpoet...thank you so much...

JP, all things for me are difficult to express, unless I can take a moment to sit, reflect, express. Please do not ever give me a verbal exam...I shall fail!

Thank you all!

I'm with ebonygirl in that the section she lifted out was the one that gripped hold of my spirit the most. I enjoyed the whole piece, but you grasped my heart, mind and spirit with the traces of veins, the hands and the could have should have

LOVELY!

Whether on the shoal or on the shore,
I'll seek the lighthouse evermore.
