Soothsayer

The palaces of prophets rise,
Towering unto forbidden skies...
But I don't need their crystal balls
To know how far a prophet falls.

For lost in the altruistic flood
Of principle, written in blood,
The sinister and gothic hue
Of conscience left for you to rue

Is, truthfully, all that still stands,
When you wash the blood from your hands,
As, shackled to this devil's ride,
No means, nor ends, are justified.

Lecterns of some forgotten text
Will leave you invariably vexed,
As you scour tomes of ridicule,
To find who it is 'played you the fool.

But when you see what is, 'stead of what's wanted,
Broken dreams leave you forever haunted...
The sky turns a darker shade of blue,
As Memory rises to claim her due.

A pagan riddle come with a price,
Your chance to forego paradise...
If but to lick your wounds and smile,
As you take up that endless mile

Somewhere 'long a linguistic thread
Of revelry, best left for dead...
A toast you give that none else heed --
All prophesies are born of need!

But Need twists you to it's own ends,
Spilling grief no oracle portends;
And when naught but the pains remains,
You walk away, a man in chains.

Yep, when it's all said and done, and when you ride with the Devil, you surely will end up "a man in chains."
quote:
A toast you give that none else heed --
All prophesies are born of need!

Such a truthful statement, among many within the body of this one, Michael.

An aching AMEN to this! You've woven a warp of wonderful rhyme and woof of hard truths... creating a fantastic fabric! *S*
