Portuguese Wine
(a conversation, with self…)

Time is not a friend
to seekers of feverous passion –
this wearing reality fades with
clever cloaking and sumptuous
single grains of simplicity
of built-in sand castles –
and the seconds pass into minutes
to hours to days and soon years past,
and blurred eyes focus becomes
the blame of it all…

Past tied to strings of melon vine.
And, time is not a friend of mine.
If it were, time would sing and dance
play the violin, and be sultry
on the rim of this etched glass
of Portuguese wine…

With a salute and toast I say:
‘World’s apart, you and I…’
I drink the time away…
Wishing…
In fantasies and daydreams,
holding on to you for a few moments,
moments in shifting and swirling sands of time…
And the seconds pass into minutes
to hours to days and soon years past,
and blurred eyes focus becomes
the blame of it all…

‘Waiter,
another glass of your best Portuguese wine;
and leave the bottle this time…
Por favor, senhor.’

I will just sit here and pass time away,
Marisa Monte in a background melody,
and I, savoring my wine,
and if you are my friend, you are welcome to join-in,

‘And,
Just so you know…
Do not point fingers of blame…’
Tomorrow is another day.
And, it is a shame,
time is not a friend.
.

I'll join in with you and try not to be a bore, but I tend to drink cheap California burgundy, so if it is all right with you . . .

Dear JL, first thing I did after reading your poem was listening to a Marisa Monte song ...brasileiro sound ... very nice!

This is a captivating conversation with self and see how time was your friend allowing you to be so nicely creative?

Thanks, Jerry.  Thanks for the reply.

Margherita:  Thank you for taking the time
to read and reply, sweet lady!

"Infinito Particular"
and "Ate parece"  are my two favorites.
But she could sing me dizzy anytime she wants.  She has a beautiful voice.

Um copo de vinho, uma boa musica
a companha de amigos,
e tempo que passa  bem devagar
A lua, as strellas, e um guitarra bem tocado
Isso e a vida boa
you brought back memories
thank you, dear poet

Thanks, Liz.  And yes, wine and good music especially a well-played guitar do make time with friends a good part of life, and those events seem to slow, even if only for a moment, time.  I am glad I brought back memories for you.

I'm going to have to find my
etched glass tonight
pour some wine,
and think of this poem...

and I do believe
the wine might be just
as delicious
as the words...

And, it is a shame,
time is not a friend.

No... it isn't... and can, in fact, be an enemy as it steals possibilities and leaves 'what ifs' in its wake. *S*

I love the melancholy of this conversation... in vino veritas. *S*

Beautiful write!!

Having never been a wine drinker, well, not since "overdosing" on Thunderbird under the Long Beach, Calif., "Pike" roller coaster in the early '60s anyway, I have to take your word for it.  Enjoyed the read anyway, my friend!

JL I hear you loud and clear in this one even though your words are soft and mellow.
This is a fine piece of writing I enjoyed very much.

j, hahhaaa... yeah that's why I joined
the coast guard....  1/2 our pay was in California-Red, the other half went to
the local bars and clubs as an investment
program.
Thanks j...
