cheap California burgundy chilled
poured into a wineglass which has been in the freezer
that's how I like it
I will write about the magic of love
as I take the first sip
back in school barely in my teens
an older girl
wearing a Cross-Your-Heart bra
fasteners and snaps begging for my fingers
to free those beauties
I obliged
her name, Alma
my first

ahhh . . .
wineglass empty
no, oh no, that will never do
second glass needed
as I pen thoughts about death
and why not
death is part of living
I've outlived most of my graduation class
the class of '57
most of them
stayed right there in Taylor
not me
I hit the road
I hit many, many roads
flirting with danger
giving it the finger and the Bronx cheer
a lot of my classmates have died
I lived

look at me
I'm on glass three
I've outlived most of my graduating class
gotta be a poem in there someplace

Sad to say I have out lived a number of the students I have worked with...suicide, drowning, car accident, cancer, overdose. I work with a population of students that are classified as "high risk" for dropping out (and other bad things it seems as well)

So you are an anexception to the rule Jerry.  We are indeed lucky to have you still here. You have beat the odds. You lucky devil!

I know I am fortunate, Lori. It is sad to think about the young ones who pass. The old say, "they had their whole lives before then" comes to mind. Thank you for being here.
